Hi Marlene!  Thank you so much for reaching out.  I want you to feel comfortable asking any question you come across in this project journey.  Hmm, because row 1 is just a single crochet row there are only a few places a counting error can occur.  

First, let's look at what Diane mentioned.  Remember, the loop on our crochet hook does not count as a chain.  Make sure there are a total of 211 chains off of the hook.

Second, let's shrink the number of stitches you make then put a stitch marker in to every 20 stitches.  This way we are catching our count even earlier reducing human error.

And third, when making your first single crochet stitch for row 1, make sure you are only skipping over one chain and crocheting into the second chain.  Ideally, we want an even number of single crochet stitches in row 1.

Hi Diane!  The foundationless stitches are very different.  I can see how finding that foundation chain space gets harder to find.  Maybe try loosening your stitch tension and really just keep practicing.  It get's easier.  Or, you might just find this is not the technique for you.  😊🧶💖
