For my own decor, I really enjoy a zen palette with pops of brighter color from koi fish, etc.

Thanks, Sandra.  I used to think the same thing, but these were easier than I thought it would be. The yarn is like round shoestrings and you use an F hook.

I would not use a 4 weight.  2 or. 3 cotton only.

The 8/4 us a 4 ply yarn so it is thinner. Still strong and soft. You may need a smaller hook size, but it depends on your tension.
